Basingstoke Festival

A new identity for an award-winning arts festival, across theatre, music, dance and family events.

I worked in-house at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, on the borough's existing arts festival. The events manager trusted me to lead a refresh of the identity, and as part of that wider campaign I also developed B LOVE, the festival's flagship music event.

The Brief

I developed a new visual identity to bring the festival's different strands, outdoor theatre, live music, dance, family events, under one recognisable brand. I worked with local artists on the illustration, rather than creating it all myself, so the look of the festival reflected the same community it was celebrating. It leans on bold colour and playful type, built to work as well on a poster as it does on a phone screen.

From there I designed the full campaign: the festival programme, posters, advertising, social assets and large-format signage, so the brand held together whether someone saw it on a banner in town or scrolling Instagram.

Refreshing an established festival, rather than starting from nothing, is exactly the kind of project I enjoy most: taking something people already love and giving it a clearer sense of itself.

B LOVE is the festival's flagship music event, which I also rebranded as part of this wider project.

That keeps the link and the connection between the two pages, without repeating the acts, the touchpoints or "ticketed destination festival" a second time on the same page.
